Climate of the city and the best time to visit
In the city of Phnom Penh temperatures range from 10° to 38°C (50° to 100°F) and the entire country experiences tropical monsoons. There is mainly the Southwest Monsoon which reigns from May to October. The northeast monsoon ushers in the dry season, which lasts from November to March. Rainfall strikes as the heaviest during the months of September and October.
Phnom Penh experiences three distinct seasons . Generally the climate is hot all through the year with minor variations. The cool season ranges from roughly November to January, the hot season from February through May and the rainy season ranges from June through October.
The best months to visit Cambodia are November to January when temperatures and humidity are lower.
Location
Phnom Penh is located in the south-central region of Cambodia . The city is located at the confluence of the Tonlé Sap and Mekong rivers. The Mekong is the chief river of Cambodia while Tonlé Sap is an important source for fishes .
The total area of the city is 376 km² (145.2 sq mi) and Phnom Penh is the most populous and wealthiest city of the country . The city is located at 11.55° N 104.91667° E .
Phnom Penh delicacies
The city of Phnom Penh is famous for its native delicacies with a wide variety of menus. Some of them are mentioned here .
Amok - It is a fish- based dish in a thick coconut milk with curry. It is wrapped in banana leaves and steamed and then it is ready for serving.
Babar - This is a type of congee or rice porridge . It can be plain or usually prepared with chicken or pork and is served with fresh bean sprouts and green onions.
Ansom chek - This is mainly a preparation of rice . It comes in the form of a cylindrical rice cake wrapped in banana leaves filled with bananas.
Ansom chrook - This is almost the same as ansom chek but it is filled with pork and mung bean paste.
The Khmer cuisine is a favorite to tourists and is a blend of Thai, Chinese and Indian cuisines. The rice noodles and beef noodles soup have chiefly Chinese influence . There are special herbs and spices used in Khmer cuisine among which prahok , a type of fermented fish paste and coconut milk are the chief ingredients for the preparation of Khmer cuisine.
Government
In 2004, Norodom Sihamoni was selected by a special nine-member committee as the King. Sihamoni's selection was supported by Prime Minister Hun Sen and National Assembly Speaker Prince Norodom Ranariddh . King Norodom Sihamoni's coronation was held in Phnom Penh on October 29. Though there is monarchy in the country but in reality the monarchy has no political power.
The Prime Minister of the country is appointed by the King and with the approval of the National Assembly . It is the Prime Minister and the ministerial appointees who exercise executive power in government.
