    Heritage of Copenhagen



    Heritage in Copenhagen is very rich and dates back almost to the pre- historic era. Their castle, identity and festivals are of high heritage value. Of the 830 properties which the World Heritage Committee has inscribed on the World Heritage List (644 cultural, 162 natural and 24 mixed properties in 138 States Parties), 3 are Danish. Heritage in Copenhagen ranges from the Danish arts and crafts, parks and gardens, monuments to natural areas. For your convenience list of heritage in Copenhagen is provided below:

    • Jelling Mounds, Runic Stones and Church:

      The Jelling burial mounds and one of the runic stones are striking examples of pagan Nordic culture, while the other runic stone and the church illustrate the Christianization of the Danish people towards the middle of the 10th century.

    • Roskilde Cathedral:

      This was Scandinavia's first Gothic cathedral to be built of brick, which was built in the 12th and 13th centuries. Since the 15th century it has been the mausoleum of the Danish royal family.

    • Kronborg Castle:

      The Royal castle of Kronborg at Helsingør (Elsinore) is of immense symbolic value to the Danish people and played a key role in the history of northern Europe in the 16th-18th centuries. It is located on a strategically important site commanding the Sund, the stretch of water between Denmark and Sweden. It is world-renowned as the setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet

    • Christianshavn - Church of our Savior:

      Located at the Vor Frelser Kirke, St Annaegade, Copenhagen, this church holds a significant work of art with towers, monuments and observation deck. It has a splendid Baroque altar decorated with figures and cherubs, a beautiful font and a richly carved organ case.

    • Copenhagen - Christiansborg Palace:

      This Christiansborg Palace is a seat of the Danish Government and Parliament (Folketing).You can visit the Parliament and the Royal Rooms on guided tours.

    • Amalienborg Palace:

      Queen Margrethe and her husband Prince Henrik usually spend the summer months at Fredensborg Palace in North Zealand. Being a tourist you can visit Christian IX’s private study, Queen Louise’s drawling room, and Frederik VIII’s study. The private rooms are royally decorated with the monarchs’ actual belongings. The palace consists of four elaborate French-style mansions built around a large square.

    • Copenhagen - Amalienborg Palace:

      This is the residence of the Queen. It was built by Niels Eigtev about 1750, during the reign of King Frederik V. In the north central area of Copenhagen, Frederiksgade leads from the Marble Church to Amalienborg Palace.

    • The Assistens Graveyard:

      It is sometimes called the Nørrebro Cemetery, which was founded in the year 1711. It is the largest cemetery in the city.

    • Copenhagen Zoo:

      Founded by the ornithologist Niels Kjærbølling in 1859, it is one of the oldest zoos in Europe.

    • Balance:

      This is a 2 meter high metal sculpture. It was made by Ane Brøgger in the year 1973.

    • The Gefion fountain:

      It is one the largest monuments in Copenhagen. It features a large-scale group of animal figures being driven by the legendary Norse goddess, Gefyon.

    • Asdal Voldanlæg:

      It is a fortress which was built around 1300. At the top of the valley runs the streem Kjulåen. There are 3 dams which can still be seen. With its moat and ramparts, Asdal Rampart tells about the life of the knights in the Middle Ages.

    • Oldtidskirkegård at Årupgård- Gram:

      It is burial mound where one of the biggest Iron Age burial places in the country has been excavated.

    • Føllet - Foal in bronze:

      It is a statue (Water artwork) which was unveiled in 1977 at the centenary of Sparekassen. The work is created by Jens Seeberg, Hvalpsund
