The city covers an area of approximately 214 square kilometer. If all the suburbs are included then the area covered by Greater Cairo would be almost 86,369.3 square kilometers. In the northern fringes of Egypt, just on the banks of the River Nile stand this bright and magnificent city. The metropolitan area of Cairo stretches almost 40 kilometers along Nile’s banks.
Cairo delicacies
The presence of foreign cuisines’ influence on the city’s food clearly exhibits her history. The delicacies of Cairo have considerable influence of North African and Turkish cuisines. The ingredients used to enhance the taste of their foods are found mostly in Middle East. Being majorly an agricultural city, the traditional natives of Cairo were always diet and hygiene conscious and preferred healthy food. Previously people of Cairo used to generally intake different types of breads with vegetables and fruits.
Cheap food is easily accessible on street restaurants and stalls; however these cheap restaurants doesn't offer alcohol. The traditional cuisines of the country such as muzagga'a (spicy aubergines), foul (bean paste), kushari (macaroni, lentils and chick peas), taamiyya (falafel) and so forth are served in all type outlets. Costlier and elite restaurants serve international cuisines as well. In the recent time fast food counters such as Pizza Hut, McDonalds, KFC and Hardees are also prevailing in Cairo. The modern European coffee, Turkish coffee and shai, tea, sahleb (a coconut drink), hibiscus tea, sugarcane, date and mango juice, tamr hindi are some of the favorite drinks of the natives and tourists.
Some of the recent cuisines available in Cairo are Cucumber chickpea salad, lemon-flavored lamb, Egyptian koshary pasta, North African cauliflower soup, stuffed dates and fried eggs with pastrami.
Government
After Egypt gained independence on 22nd February 1922, the ruling party drafted and implemented the new constitution. Since 1953 Mohamed Hosni Mubarak, apart from being the leader of National Democratic Party, has been serving as the President of Egypt. Dr. Ahmed Nazif was appointed the Prime Minister of Egypt in the year 2004.
Local administrators and national policy makers were administering the capital before the year 1949. The municipality of Cairo was constructed in the year 1949 and was inaugurated the next year. Since 1950 there has been only the prevalence of municipal government in Cairo. Moreover, the country’s central government plays a principle role in ruling her capital and taking care of her budget and day to day expenditures. The National Ministry for Local Administration initiated a systematic uniformity in the local governments in Cairo since 1960. The municipal government of Cairo comprises of Governor and the Popular Assembly. The governor is appointed by the President of Egypt. The council which is known as the Popular Assembly consists of both appointed and elected members, of which only the latter has the voting rights.
