A country's heritage includes all traces of human activity in the physical environment. Helsinki Samba Carnival
This carnival generally takes place in the first week of June. The rhythms and colors of Samba take over Helsinki at the annual Helsinki Samba Carnival. Over 1000 sambiasts from schools in Helsinki, Kokkola, Lahti, Tampere and Turku take part in the main event and in Saturday's parade. This is one of the most important heritage of Helsinki.
Helsinki Day
This day is celebrated annually in the month of June. Nearly half a millennium ago, the city of Helsinki was founded by a Swedish king. Although this is not a national holiday but this day is commemorated each year with great celebrations and events all around the city.
Night of the Arts
This is celebrated in the last week of August. This is one of the highlights of the annual Helsinki festival, showing off the city and its talent. Art galleries, libraries and bookstores all open their doors until late and more than 100 events are held throughout the city.
Traditional Sailing Ship Meet
This day is observed in the month of October at the market square. The Helsinki shore welcomes a number of traditional sailing ships which compete against each other on Saturday before docking at market square for the traditional sailing ship meet on Sunday, when they are open for all.
Christmas Lights
This festival is observed in the month of May. Helsinki's official Christmas street, is declared open in a ceremony at the Senate square, illuminating the dark winter evening with festive lights. The official opening ceremony is followed by a parade that goes along Aleksanterinkatu to Stockmann deratment storeand returns to the senate square along the Esplanade.
The Forces of Light Festival
The forces of light festival or “Valon Voimat” is held annually in Helsinki at the darkest time of the year – in the month of November and December. It aims to create a network of artists, producers, institutions and viewers from different cities, focusing on public areas of the urban community.
The Official Independence Day Celebration
Finland celebrates its independence in the month of December. Students and veterans lay wreath pieces at the monuments of the heroes at Hietaniemi cemetery and is followed by a torchlight parade from the cemetery to the Senate square.
Women's Christmas Market
This festival is celebrated in the month of December. The Christmas market at Wanha Satema sells new and unique Finnish products made by women including jewelery, knitting, carpet, ceramics, leather and woodwork, clothing, baked goods and Christmas treat and decorations. This is popularly known as the women's Christmas market.
New Year Celebration
Helsinki's Neo – classical Senate square is generally a calm place except the night on the eve of New Year. Pile with the fleeces everyone prepare for a noisy night and shout down the Finnish as well as global new year. This is when one truly feels the warming power of Vodka.
Music Nova Helsinki
This is the biggest music festival of Helsinki and is celebrated in the month of March. Every year the Musica Nova Helsinki festival of new music takes over various venues around the city presenting concerts, debut performances, composer's workshop and dance theaters.
