The country stores a treasure of minerals and is the richest in this aspect among all African countries. Rivers like Niger, Senegal and Gambia are the basic water resource for the country. The word 'Guinea' comes from the desert of Sahara, where the Western coastal region was earlier called as 'The Gulf Of Guinea'.

But in 1895, when it was included as a part of French West Africa, it was given the name 'Guinea'. Guinea got it's independence in 2 October, 1958 and Sékou Touré was the first President of the independent Guinea.
