Till a few decades ago the students were taught only Qurans in the various mosques of Tehran. Later with modernity and development creeping in, the educational system in Tehran has undergone a substantial makeover. Today public and private schools prevail in Tehran harmoniously while making the base of education in Tehran stronger and far -fetched. Islamic studies in every educational institute in Tehran are a must and special Cultural Revolution Committee has been formed to look after the progress of Islamic values in schools and other educational institutes. In the last decade, the committee brought out almost 3,000 college level books conveying the Islamic views and rules. Incorporation of Islamic education has been made obligatory in every nook and corner of the country from the primary classes to that of the highest levels of education in Tehran.
On an average almost 73% of the total population of Tehran over the age of 15 receives education. The percentage has constantly been on the rise in the last few years. There are organizations to promote higher education in Tehran. The national government also plays an important role in taking the education in Tehran to a new horizon. Children are encouraged to get enrolled in the educational institutes. With the considerable increase in the number of private as well as public schools, the number of teaching professionals has also increased. A substantial portion of the country’s revenue is invested into the education in Tehran.
Kindergarten education:
This part of education in Tehran is not made mandatory by the government. However, it’s a one year course which starts at the age of 5 years. There are some public as well as private kindergarten schools providing the fundamental training to the children. Great care of the children are taken by the administrative departments of these kindergarten schools.
Primary education (debestan):
At the age of 6 the primary education in Tehran takes off and the duration of the course extents to 5 years. Teachers with prior trainings are hired for attending these primary level students.
Middle school education (dawra’i-rahnama’ii tahsili):
After the completion of the primary standard education, pupils move on to the middle schools. It provides education to the students from class six to eight.
High school education (dabirestan):
To opt for the high school education or not solely depends on the pupil. It lasts for 3 years and is not mandatory for all. The hihschool education in Tehran has been divided into three specialized sections: theoretical, vocational/ technical and manual. Generally, it is experienced that the institutes of technology, community schools, universities and medical schools offer the high school education to the pupils. By entering the high school one acquires the high school diploma. Nikan High School, Razi High School, Alborz High School and Firouz Bahram High School are some of the educational institutes which offer the higher education.
University education:
One has to complete the high education; in order to apply for the Bachelor degree. After acquiring the high school diploma certificate one can go for the four year’s of preparation, which leads to pursue a Bachelor’s degree (karshenasi). Alzahra University, Imam Sadeq University, Tarbiat Moallem University, Sharif University of Technology is some of the educational institutes from where the Bachelor’s degree can be obtained.
Education for master degree (fogh licence):
After attending two years of full fledged classes this degree in provided to pupils. Just after the completion of this course one can opt for going into a doctoral program. Additional exams should be qualified to be a part of this program.
Apart from the regular educational systems, there are other private educational institutes in Tehran which offer specialized trainings. Many go for these courses and education as well.
