Liberia is situated at the West Coast Africa and is officially named as 'Republic Of Liberia'. The word Liberia literally means 'the land of free'. People from sixteen different ethnic groups form the population of Liberia.
Official Languages:
Due to immense influence of Americans, the national and the official language of Liberia is English. Among other languages spoken and written by the citizens of Liberia in various parts of the country are Dan, Bassa, Dewoin, Bandi, Gbii, Glio-oubi, Gola, Grebo, Kisi, Klao and others.
Independence, Republic and Government:
In early nineteenth century, Liberia was a colony under the rule of American Colonization Society. The slave tradition was at it's peak then. With the co-operation of British Navy, Joseph Jenkins Roberts performed the coup and declared the country free on July 26, 1847. This was one of the first two countries to get independence among West African countries. Even after the country got it's independence, the slave tradition continued for more than a decade illicitly.
Due to instability in the politics of Liberia for another century, two rebelling groups were formed. One was MODEL, 'the Movement For Democracy In Liberia' and another was LURD, 'Liberians United For Reconciliation And Democracy'. With the intervention of the Government of Liberia, LURD and MODEL negotiated and agreed to sign a peace agreement on July 17, 2003. On August 11 of the same year the President had to resign as a part of the agreement and Liberia re-established the state of an independent country.
Now the Republic Of Liberia operates very similar to the American government. Most of the powers regarding running the government are vested in the President.
